Tell me why people care about American Idol? Does anyone else agree with me that if these people were actually any good, they could get an agent and go about finding fame the way most singers who are actually good have done- through hard work and dedication. If you're actually good, why would you allow yourself to be ridiculed by a panel of judges via the homes of millions of people who have nothing better to do than watch TV?

I have never been able to watch that show and almost posed this question myself (probably in not such a nice way:) It really bothers me that they sing other people's songs. There are so many talented singer/songwriters out there that are already getting pushed aside for this overly produced pop crap that we have too much of already. I kept waiting for this show to fall out of popularity, but strangely more and more people are watching it. I just don't get what "it" is - I wish I did 'cause I'd have a lot more hours of TV to watch every week.

O.k. um, do you know the name and phone number of a good agent and do you have a pocket full of money for a recording studio? You must not know very much about the music business or you wouldn't have asked this question. American Idol, as controversial as it is, gets your name to millions of people within a very short period of time. In simple terms it just makes life easier for a potential singer.

Sometimes you can be discovered on a tv show. Having an agent only allows selective people to hear your talent. Being seen on national tv, whether you make an *** out of yourself, has a bigger audience.

That's my personal opinion

It is great exposure. The industry isn't as simplified as your question/statment suggests.
