If you've already chosen which universities to apply to, then you're ahead of the game. If you haven't visited them already, and you have the means to do so, that's a good thing to do over the summer holidays. Also, if you are doing that, it's best to go at the beginning of the summer. It's a really good time to compare the universities because very often the brochures are similar... sunny blue skies, with trees on the quad, and a student relaxing there studying, etc. By visiting them you get to feel their different personalities. But don't only talk to the tour guides. They're trained to make the university look amazing.

As far as the applications go, I would start in the summer as well. Read over the questions, and the requirements in case you have questions so that if you visit colleges you can have them answered. Also it's good to make a list of the due dates for both the college application and the financial aid so that you can organize yourself and not miss any deadlines.

At least start the applications by the end of the summer because when school starts again you'll find that you have less time and you're ignoring the applications to do homework.

Also, if you have a favorite university you could apply early decision. These applications are usually due mid-November so it's always good to get a head start in case they lose part of your application or you have to get more recommendations, etc.

The rest of the applications are usually due around January. But since winter break comes before then it's best to get the recommendations and transcripts before then.

As for financial aid, you'll have to check the deadlines but I'm pretty sure they are due later on, like in the beginning of Spring.

Good luck! And I hope you get in where you would like! :D

I would start late 2007/ early 2008. You'll need SAT scores and other information that may not be available to you until then.

You should've started during the fall of your junior year.
But, it is never too late.
Your applications should be completed by
