Do you know how to factor a number? That's the best way to start.

1) Write out all of the factors for the numerator and all of the factors for the denominator.

2) If the fraction is able to be reduced, at least one factor of the numerator will be the same as a factor of the denominator. Find the factor that is found in both the numerator and the denominator, called the COMMON FACTORS. If there is more than one common factor between the numerator and denominator, pick the biggest one, called the GREATEST COMMON FACTOR (GCF). Identifying the GCF allows you to reduce the fraction to the smallest fraction possible, all in one step.

3) Divide the numerator by the GCF and the answer is your reduced numerator.

4) Divide the denominator by the GCF and that is your reduced denominator.

5) Put the new numerator over the new denominator and you have your reduced fraction.

Simplifying a fraction is just reducing it to it's simplest form. To do that you find th biggest common denominator and divide both halves of the fraction by it to get the smallest possible verson of that fraction. For example 12/18 can be simplified by finding the common denominator, which is this case is 6. You divide 12 by 6 which is 2; 18 by 6 is 3, so your simplified fraction is 2/3. If the answer you get can be divided smaller then you did't have the biggest denominator.
