No, he became Chancellor.
Keep in mind, he was a powerful speaker and was actually good leader. He was highly charismatic and it was easy for him to lead a nation of people who were in a depression and had low expectations and were sick of the rest of the world treating them like ww1 germans.

Hitler came to power by feeding on the bruised ego of a nation that had lost WW1 and never got over it. Hitler found people who felt the same way he did, then he became the person that voiced what everyone was thinking. This made his reputation, which is the first step to gaining public support. He was charismatic, so his popularity increased as he publicly brought more groups into his camp. Interestingly, he gained the support of a large portion of the Jewish population, as they were the "money" people at the time in Germany. He led the Jews to believe that they would profit from a stronger Germany, so they willingly supported and financed his campaign. Once his position was secure, that was when he turned on the Jews and anyone else he felt was inferior to Germans. By turning Germans against each other, the citizens were either happy to be on Hitler's side, or too frightened to draw attention to themselves. This is similar to how many a Roman emporer came to power.

More or less this,
1914 joins bavairian regiment to fight in WW1. Here he meets some people who will be helpful later.
He is wounded in a gas attack near the end of the war. He gets two medals for bravery.
1919 joins the german workers party which at the time is led by Aton Drexler. He is made spokesperson and incharge of propaganda.
1919-1922 Hitler was a very charismatic person. He used his charisma to consolidate power. About this time he meets Capt. Ernst Rhom who also fought in WW1. The S.A. is formed at first to prevent communists from breaking up party meetings and then later to break up communist party meetings. Hilter bigins to shape the party to his own ends.
1923 Beer hall pustch. Hitler attempts to seize power in Bavairia. It fails and he is put in jail. Here he writes Mein Kamph.
1924-1929 After being realeased from jail Hitler promises to fight for power by votes not violence. He is helped by the difficulties the Germans have economicaly and politicaly. The wall street crash hits the german economy hard and this is a god send for hitler.
1929-1933 Having become the main power in the Nazi party Hitler now focouses on gaining power in the Reichstag. He runs for president but is defeated by Hindenburg. Germany is in political turmoil. Hindenburg is facing a civil war in Germany. The only person who looks like he can bring any sort of stability is Hitler. In Janurary 1933 and against his better judgment Hindenburg makes Hilter chanceller.
1933-1935 Hitler liquidates all political oposotion and consolidates power after Hindenburg dies.
This is more or less what Hitler did. Its alot more complicated than this but as a brief overview its ok.

While working for the government in the early 20's, he was sent to spy on the Nazi party (only had a few members at the time). Hitler took control of the group, and it expanded greatly. In 1932 he became Chancellor, and you should be able to figure it out from there. He took advantage of the German peoples poverty and economic depression (it is thought that the economic depression in Germany in the 20's and 30's was worse than the Great Depression in the US), which was a result of the Treaty of Versailles. At the end of World War 1, Germany received much of the blame for what happened, and had to give up lands and money and their army. People were living in extreme poverty. They thought that Hitler could lead them out of this poverty and economic depression.

He was at the right place at the right time. The Alies had so crippled Germany with the Versies(sp) Treaty that they were at that time willing to cling to anyone promising them salvation from their situation and a return to glory!
