In my own experience besides general weathering, bird droppings rapidly cause disintegration of roofing felt, I had to resort to putting a strip of outdoor weather resistant plywood on the area that the birds perch and after replacing the felt every year, the plywood strip cured the problem, I painted the plywood to match the roof. Another cause is Sunlight, thats why roofers sprinkle white chips on the roof as it reflects the Sunlight.
