Other than batting averages and mL to L or mm to Meters? I need to relate thousandths to real life for fourth graders. Thanks for your help!

An obvious one would be time problems. Maybe the difference between first and second place in a race is a few thousandths of a second. Also, you could describe that their nails grow a few thousandths of an inch per day. Hair would be another example. Maybe a population problem, where a few thousandths of the population does something. Hope that helps.

I would relate it to decimals. anytime you have .001 you are dealing with 1 thousandth of 1 unit. I dont think it really applies much to 4th graders, but the best way would be to think big. like 1 year is 1/1000 of a millennium.

In machine work measurements are in thousandths of an inch. If a piece is not cut accurately it will fail to work properly. A few thousandths of an inch wear can ruin an engine. Adjustments of engines (i.e. spark plug gaping) is measured in thousandths of an inch. i hope that might help.

I once read that the human finger can detect a ridge of height one thousandth of an inch. Obviously it depends on the person but much less than that and no-one can.

The amount of electric power from an AA battery is given in milliAmphours (look on the side of a rechargable AA battery, and it will probably say 2100 mAh, or 2400 mAh or something like that).

In drag racing, times are measured to the 1000th of a second, and speeds are measured out to 3 decimal places (1/1000th of a mph).

Dot (pixel) size on a computer screen is measured and specified in fractions of a millimeter. Usually, it is around 0.2 mm or smaller.
