You really don't need to look any further than our newspapers, blogs, television and yahoo answers to find plenty of vitriolic pure unbridled hate for others who simply have different solutions to the same problems. I hope you can forgive me for that run-on sentence. My passion for this problem is enough to distort my ability to think, and in this case communicate. That brings me to the central problem:

Passion can be a good or bad thing, depending on how and in which direction it is channeled. Partisanship is an example of passion being channeled in a negative way.

What can we do to alleviate this problem and restore our modern society to better health?

That is a tough question. All successful government are based on conflict. But the partisanship isn't as important as the ability to negotiate and find a middle ground. America, for example, is so polarized that negotiating only leads to more problems but the stability of our government gives us hope that with time brings change for the good. Just think about the problems in Italy, they can't even form a stable government and their views are considered moderate compared to us. Proportional representation has it's pluses (decreased partisanship) but is it worth the risk of going years without a stable government? I think I will keep my lousy two party government that can actually get a few things done, if only a few.

I'm amazed in debates how easily one person's attitude can change things for the better. Seriously, partisanship is a big problem--but all you can do is speak out, and if you hold others to a high standard--you have to hold yourself to a higher one.

Encourage open discussion. Don't vote or support people who don't want to hear another persons opinion.
I know it is hypocritical to ignore people who don't "play well with others" But it is the only way to take their power away.
