J is the traditional middle initial for toons who do not have a middle name (so, technically, it doesn’t ‘stand for’ anything.) For those toons whose first name started with a J, their middle initial is usually Q, and for those who have ‘the’ as part of their title (Smokey the Bear, Winnie the Pooh), their middle initial is T, for ‘the’.

i don't know when he exactly inherited the intital J, but there was a spin-off in some comic, that mixes elmer and judge dread, maybe the j was added afterwards for "judge".
