Actually, the term soccer originated in England...So, you can't really blame us for it.

As for how the term soccer came to be, it comes from the term aSOCCiation Football. Adding the ER is sometimes a common thing in slang, hence the term soccer.

Why do Americans call it soccer? Because we already have American Football and want to prevent confusion.

Because we already have a sport called football. And our football is more popular that soccer over here so to not confuse the two what you call football was changed to soccer.

Why do the Europeans call soccer football?

That actually has something to do with the shortening of the longer name "Association Football". Somehow a short form of this sport became the word "Assoc", the section in Association. Eventually the word was modified to sound better and become easier to say to "soccer". This is why some call the sport soccer and others still call it football.

lolol.... Humm, not sure why we use the word soccer but probably because along time ago we took boats across the sea from europe to america and forgot the rules to the sport so we made up our own version of the sport and combined it with a few other sports and continued to call it football. aka american football. I guess soccer just fell into place after we realized we screwed up the rules of the sport. lol dunno..
