I heard about this fish on the discovery channel during a show called blue planet or something. anyone have any idea what creature is the dumbo fish?

You're probably thinking of the so-called Dumbo octopus, Grimpoteuthis.

Grimpoteuthis swims using two enlarged, round paddles on the sides of its body - being an octopus, these paddles look to us much like big round ears on the sides of the critter's head.

as it size or the fact that it flies - we have Flying Fish here, they have huge wing like fins that could look like ears.
Or was it the Sea Elephant / Elephant Seal that has a trunk like snout and is very large?
