get elected and then say screw the party system and declare him/herself an independent and truly act as one.. how do you think America would react.. how do you think Congress would react? Do you think this would be a good thing?

If the policies made sense - yes, I'd welcome someone not beholden to the party line. Maybe it would get us out of this restrictive two party system.

I believe many people would be elated albeit a little skeptical. Over time he could gain the trust of Congress and the people. Alot could get done. Partisanism has gotten in the way of many good bills the last 6 to 8 years.

This may sound odd to you, but, in the darkest days of the Watergate scandal, many were fearful Nixon was contemplating just that, for several weeks. Nixon wrote in his memoirs he never, ever considered such an act, and, as President, he swore to uphold the Constitution.

You would see a more unified congress. They would finally be able to agree on something, the hatred of the president. Nothing would be achieved because it would be all out war between the executive and legislative branch. All bills would be vetoed and vetoes would be overturned.

No politician is capable of ignoring party lines. Even so-called "independent" voters and politicians alike are incapable of refraining from engaging in party-bashing.

It would never happen.

It doesn't really matter what party you come from when a person becomes President because Speical Interest groups/lobbyists run US Govt. not the politicans that the US people vote for.

Most Americans wouldnt care. Cause most Americans dont think about serious issues. they vote based on who is the shiniest candidate, not party.
