I started a vegetable/herb garden last year. I had my H did up the sod first. Than we spread compost and topsoil on top (looking back we should have roto-tilled it in--you can rent a roto-tiller from a hardware store). Then I put an edging around the garden to look neat, and I put my seeds in the ground after the weather was warm enough to not frost again.
It wasn't the most sophisticated way to go about it, but stuff still grew.
You can do all the above and instead of using seeds, just buy flowers/veggies at the store and put them directly in the ground.
Also, check out some library books for more info.
As to when to start-find your "zone" on the internet, and that should give you a clue. Probably for most parts of the US, the first or second week of May is a good bet.

It depends on where in the country you are.

You can start germinating seedlings about 6 weeks prior to the last risk of frost, and then transplant the healthy ones to the ground as soon as it's safe.

As for what to grow, that's a personal issue. What do you like? Most plants are pretty easy and a good variety are fairly hardy. Go for tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, strawberries, peas, bell peppers, and some herbs (coriander, parsley, etc).

Don't become discouraged if a few of them die. Sometimes they're just not as tough as you'd like.

As an alternative, you can purchase pre-started plants at a garden center (Armstrong, Home Depot, etc). They usually have plant guarantees, and can tell you what would grow well in your area.

Have fun!

You can start very soon. First, start reading everything you can on what you want to plant. Go online, go to the library, buy magazines, etc. Good luck. Gardening is fun and good exercise.

Make it fun! Buy a pack of radish seeds and plant them. No skill is required. It is easy, quick, satisfying, and the radishes are delicious. I did this 55 years ago when I was a kid and am still gardening and loving it! Go for it and have fun!

That all depends on what you are wanting to plant and what you are wanting to start from.

This is a good time to start planting potatoes. Peanuts also should probably be planted soon.

If you are going to start onions from seeds you probably should start onion seeds indoors about now. Also now would be a good time to start growing sweet potatoe shoots indoors to plant later for sweet potatoes. And if you want to get an early start on your tomatoes and start your own tomato plants from seeds here real soon would be a good time to start the tomato seeds indoors.

The majority of your plants and seeds you want to plant around the beginning to middle of April.

can't do anything till the ground softens, then first thing is to know what you want, go to the nurseries, look around, read the labels.
