I am neither American, ( a person from the USA) or a European so allow me an independent view.
Firstly, Europeans could be forgiven for thinking that they were unloved by certain 'Americans,' ( if you believe what you read in the press,) because of their reluctance and even refusal to support the USA with their membership in the 'Coalition of the Willing', during the invasion of Iraq. ( Such membership, if the situation was reversed, with European nations demanding the same, would be arguable scorned by any free thinking people anywhere who felt a foreign country was imposing its own policies on another.)
Second, this was considered by certain 'Americans', a slight on a country with an administration hell bent to remove what we all know now to be 'phoney weapons' - the very justification given for that invasion.
Most Europeans have never been to the USA and their knowledge and attitudes to the USA are largely formed by the international press agencies such as AAP and Reuters, the same sources that form attitudes within the USA and indeed everywhere else.
If we feel people don't like us, we can take two kinds of actions. We can become defensive and resentful. Or, we can try to meet them half way in an effort to resolve our differences. Friendship, if we value it, ( and historically, both the USA and Europe have enjoyed a high degree of it,) is an active process, reaching out to settle any differences that occur even in the best of relationships.

Because of the attitudes of some Americans who go overseas. It is fine to be patriotic, but there is a place and time for that. Unfortunately some Americans have not grasped that, and they can be extremely pushy, and somehow expect that the rest of the world should be and wants to be like the US. As opposed to following the statement, "when in Rome do like the Romans", some Americans act like "when in Rome, the Romans should become more American". Just an attitude thing.

Everything is bigger and better in Texas! Have you ever heard that saying? Well they think we all have the Texas attitude and actually we do. We have this great big wonderful land with all its' wealth and resources and we really are quite wasteful. I had no clue until I traveled in Ireland and the UK. They are tiny islands with a tiny mindset. They sing songs about their mountains and are obviously quite proud of them and there isn't a one that would make a good hill compared to our mountains. I kept thinking these are very pretty hills but when are we getting to the mountain? Well, those are the mountains. Everyone drives tiny cars that we only drive if one person is commuting a long way and saving on gas. That's what the whole family piles into. They measure petrol (gas) by the liter, not the gallon and a liter costs what a gallon does as they have no natural resources. Now, think of the size of a two liter bottle of Pepsi and half that. I was eating in a restraunt that was having trouble with a light in the lobby. We were sitting by the front window and here comes this car the size of a metro with ladders on top of it. That was the electrician. Can you imagine any kind of a workman in the US not having a pick up truck? Never saw a one over there. I live in the mid-west and grew up on a farm and the fields covered acres and acres. They have these tiny little plots with rock fences built around them and that's the farm ground. We have roadside ditches so much bigger and we grow nothing on them and ours stretch mile after mile. Tesco is the only place we ever saw a plastic sack with your purchases in it. Most women carry a string market bag and carry home what they need for the day and they walk to the grocery. I came home thinking how rich and wasteful we really are. No wonder they resent us. We have so much and they have so little but don't seem to mind. You see very few heavy people there compared to the national crisis we are having over health related weight problems. I changed a lot since coming home but I still can't figure out what to do with all these darn wal-mart sacks.

This is a very broad statement and one I doubt is accurate. Perhaps that's your experience - it's certainly not mine. I don't think MOST Europeans dislike Americans. Probably most are indifferent, if anything. Americans, and I am one, tend to think the rest of the world spends a great deal of time fretting over us! That's just not the case...

I've met probably a handful of Europeans who disliked me because I'm an American and they fell into to catergories stupid people and snobs. However, I've met tons of Europeans who dislike US policies and are angry with us for the things our goverment has done.

They resent the fact that Americans in general are superior to Europeans. They are jealous of the fact that God plays favorites, and blessed Americans with more of what is best on this planet and gave Europe less of it. It rubs Europeans the wrong way that Americans don't even appreciate what God has given them.
The EU is doing a fine job of rectifying the injustice and putting those pampered wasteful American ingrates in their place though. Soon America will be bankrupted, and forced to become the North American Union, the NAU a wholly owned subsidiary of the EU and that will teach those American's to think they were better that Europeans. They will add the NAU to the AU (African Union), then start on Asia.
They never learn.

I'm from Belgium and i like Americans, they're very social. They're much more friendly than most europeans (more friendly than north-europeans, i don't know about south-europeans).
