Sex is only to be avoided when your Doctor says so. Dilation is not a reason to avoid it- You need to avoid it once your bag of waters has broken.
To encourage labor: You can always try nipple stimulation- but only if your doctor has approved it. Walk A LOT! Maybe your doctor can help with stripping your membranes or giving you a vaginal suppository with pitocin.
Just a few ideas I have been given i the past and I am on baby #5.

Typically women who have had pre-term labor are encouraged to refrain from sex since there is a slight possibility of this bringing labor on. It is not a sure-fire way, though. This is a question I would ask your doctor about for sure. Normally most doctors will say that sex is OK up until your water breaks. I have had 4 babies all born past their due dates (between 5-11 days late). I tried just about every suggestion any one made to get labor going. Personally, nothing worked for me. Those babies have an odd tendency to want to come when THEY are ready and not before. I was dilated 2-3 centimeters and effaced fully with my 3rd baby for 3 weeks before she was born 5 days past her due date. Every week the doctor said, "Oh, I'll be seeing you sometime before your next appointment." He was just surprised as I was frustrated when I showed up 3 weeks in a row.

My doctor told me and my husband to have lots of sex to help start labor. If you are dialated i think sex is ok as long as you are not in active labor and you have no pain

It's fine unless your water has broken or your doc has otherwise cut you off. With my 3rd, I walked around dilated 3 for 2 weeks and had sex often in that time period. In fact, with all 3 of my children that I carried to term, my husband and I had sex all the way up until a day or 2 before I gave birth. Enjoy! (Tips-have sex and walk a lot)

First off there are NO CONCLUSIVE studies stating that sex will help your baby come out faster, it's just a myth. And if your doctor is telling you it is okay to have sex then go ahead. Really though it does suck knowing that your almost there but guess what? You are almost there! Your baby will come out when he/she needs to. And if she doesn't start to your docor will induce labor when they feel it necessary :) Congrats and good luck with your labor.

i would recommend you stray from sex your last few weeks, having sex might discomfort you and your child and might cause your water to break while your man is inside you.
