OK, I know you are not going to like my answer, but I will write it up anyway. First of all, let me say that I do wish that marriage was something special and to be cherished (and unfortunately it is no longer so). But I have to tell you that I don't agree that marriage has anything to do with God. (I am not an atheist) Why is it not enough to say that marriage is an exchange of vows or promises between two people. I think that is as sacred as it gets because our word is the best thing that one person can give to another especially if that word includes committing your heart and soul to the other. Anyways, I believe that marriage should be forever because it represents a committment of one person to the other; moreover, it is a a concious choice that is to be made rationally not on the basis of this overrated image of love. Let's face it, marriage is so much more that an expression of love; it symbolizes the union of flesh and soul, respect, trust and care for one another. But the thing is that many people do not realize or think of marriage that way and they rush into it cos the woman is pregnant or just cos the society dictates that you are supposed to get married at a certain age or under certain circumstances. When people get married due to such reasons, the marriage is bound for faliure. Furthermore, people don't also realize that marriage is hard work, it has its own ups and downs...but the thing is that when the going gets tough it is just so much easier to divorce someone than to stick with that person. That is why it matters to get married for the right reasons.
However, I do believe in divorce, because sometimes people change and drift away and are not really the same as the day they got married. And we all know how bad things can go when two people start realizing that one is not right for the other. Especially with children, it is better to get a divorce that to let them see mommy and daddy fighting all the time (believe me, I was subjected to such things as a kid and oh how many times did I wish that my parents would just split up-it made me lose any hope of finding someone special for myself). You know if divorce does happen, there is nothing embarassing about it...it's just life and we all know that it is unpredictable! What bothers me about divorce though is taht it is there, too available and people are always looking for the easy way out, looking to put the least amount of effort into things.
To answer your question...marriage is a sacred union between two people; God has nothing to do with it because it is up to the two people and ONLY them to live in the union. Marriage is a concious decision made on rational thinking and yes, sometimes it does end in divorce either because people rush into it or because they drift apart too much. There is nothing wrong with a divorce as long as it is used as the LAST RESORT!!!

Nope, that's completely wrong.
You can have a marriage without involving religion or god. Marriage is a social and legal contract, and can be granted by the state. My wife and I are atheists, and we got married by a judge. There were no bibles involved, it was completely secular. Some people choose to have their marriage recognized by a church as well, but everyone has to have their marriage recognized by the state in order for you to have the rights associated with marriage.
Divorce is the dissolusion of that contract, and it is perfectly acceptable to get one if you are truly not happy. Why would anyone waste their life being miserable when they could correct the problem. Most people in America agree with this, as 50% of all marriages end in divorce.

Yes i totally agree with you on this one. You are so right and people should stay married til death do they part. Divorce should not even be in the marriage dictionary or ever even spoken in marriage. God hates divorce . BUT if there is severe physical abuse or adultery or fornication on the marriage or if the unbelieving spouse wants out these are the only options and reasons to even think about divorce . There is also marriage counseling and help for marriages that are hurting as well. Praying for God to help in a marriage is key as well and we have to make sure that God is the center of our marriage from day one. God ordained marriage for sure. I do not believe in divorce for just any reason.

Who's "god". You are ASSuming that everyone has the same religious beleifs as you?
Again to lady hewett...who's "god"...are you not aware that a large percentage of the population of earth does NOT believe in "god". So your reference to "god" and marriage is a moot point...besides Marriage originally had nothing to do with religion. It was strictly a civil union. It wasn't until the Christians decided to take over everything that it became religious. In fact there have been many times throughout history that Christians were just as ruthless as certain Muslim factions and terroized those of other religions in an effort to force them to convert. But I'll bet that tidbit of Christian history didn't make onto the "marriage.com" website did it?

Keep smoking that crack pipe.
There are people that have to get divorced because they are being tortured (addiction, infidelity etc) by their spouses. God never said he wanted to see people tortured.
