A friend who just started a business a few months ago, called me and asked for help. He said he'd pay me for my time...

He's really busy, and asked if I could make some appointments, call people, setup interviews to hire help, email requesting information, etc.

Well, one of the people he interviewed just gave him their refrences.

He asked me to call them and gave me a few questions to ask…

I feel funny checking on someone I've never met. I think HE should call them because he's going to be making the decision on hiring.

What do I do?

I think the best thing at this point would be to address this concern to your friend. Simply tell him, "Hey, look, dude, I'll be glad to make this follow-up call for you, but since you're the person who ultimately will be in charge of this hire, don't you think it would be better if you called him yourself?". If your friend says no, then he'll have to live with the consequences of his decision. That's the joy of ownership-ultimately, there's no one to blame for mistakes except yourself.

I agree that he should make the final decision, but maybe you could do the preliminary calls to filter out any bad candidated. Just say you're calling on behalf of ABC company to verify information on an employment application. Most people will be friendly because no one puts people they don't like on applications, and everyone usually wants to help their friends get a job. If anyone is hesitant or negative about the applicant it says a lot and can save time in the long run.

Good Luck.
