Here's a simple explanation: The clouds that produce lightning are heavily charged with static electricity -- so heavily charged, in fact, that the static electricity has to be discharged. Static electricity in clouds is negatively charged, and when the electricity builds up to the point of discharge it creates an arc (lightning bolt) that goes to more positively charged body on the face of the Earth. When this happens, there is a disruption in the air that is so quick and so powerful that it causes a sonic boom (thunder). Does that help?

Lightning is simply static electricity, like you experience in the winter only many times more powerful. It builds up in the Earth and in the clouds and when the charge is high enough and two oppositely charged area come close enough a spark is created, which is the lightning. Lightning can travel from cloud to cloud or between the clouds and the Earth. Thunder is caused by the lightning. The lightning discharge causes the air around it to superheat rapidly, such that the expanding heated air travels faster than the speed of sound creating a sonic boom that is the sound we call Thunder.

Static electricity builds up inside the clouds from negatively and positively charged particles from the clouds and groud. Then, the energy is released when the amount of energy becomes too much. Thunder, is the sound of the air that is heated up and expands, moving at the speed of sound from the discharge causing a 'sonic boom' of the rapid movement of air.

by the the process watercycle ,clouds will be formed.when two or more clouds hit together,we can hear a big sound.this is known as thunder and the lights from the clouds are known as lightning.light will go faster than sound,so that we are hearing lighting first and thunder second.
