I think the "devolve" theory sound really convincing.... with us protecting the week and less intelligent population and with them having so many children... There is not a good gene passing on to the next generations... and also, diseases and climate changes are what makes a specie evolve, how are we to evolve, if we create things to conter-act climate changes and diseases....

We create cures, we create better houses, better shelters, better thing to protect us from any threat.... how are we to change if the week do not die, and if the stron gene is not the one that is passed on?

There is no way...

But on the other hand.... we are also trying to get more civilized by creating better governments, regulations, laws, etc.. and all these are created by the still bright and intelligent people of our times... Then in some way we are making people change their way of thinking, and in that way we do evolve, our views and ethics are the ones that we are trying to improve... and we are making it happen....

There is less racism now than before, now more children go to school than before, now people have time to study rather than spend the time as slaves, or being killed by anyone like in the medieval period, and etc etc etc...

We do get more civilized, and that is helping us change our views and ultimatelly make our minds and brains evolve...

Then yes! I believe humanity is getting smarter....

The environment will decide.

Here's a primer on the R-K theory. All living things reproduce.
Some creatues have few offspring, high intelligence, long life and invest heavly in them(dolphins, elephants, primates).
While others produce large numbers of offsping, quite dumb and invest much less parental effort in each individual (Salmon, rabbits. etc). Since rabbits have a very high death rate
from preditors, well they reproduce like... well rabbits.

If there is a high disese(and subsequently date rate from maleria and other pathigens) rate humans will become idiotic, violent, short lived, fast reproducing machines(Think of the prison population without the prison). Those with low reproductive rates will die off faster than replenishment.

If there is a low disease and death rate we will evolve into more intelligent, long lived, less feritle people (Think MIT students). Those with high repro/violence rates will all be incarcerated or killed via genocide by smarter people (There are dozens of instances of this in the past 1000 years..You think human nature has changed, think again).

Unfortunatly global warming will increase the global death rate due to disease,

Thus, Humans are going to evolve to be stupider over the next thousand years or so.

Guessing that's how Darwin would respond.

Possibly, but for the short term (biologically speaking) we will just continue to become smarter and more advanced humans...we won't know the difference, we'll just figure that we are a smarter version of homo sapiens. But at some point a future biologist may look back, and it will strike him that the human being of his time compares to 21st century human the same way modern homo sapiens compares to, oh I don't know, Neanderthal or Cro-Magnon Man or Bill O'Reilly...so, yeah, I guess there is some evolving in our future ...if we don't blow ourselves up...or make the planet uninhabitable before we have the capability to live off-world...or loose some lethal plague on the whole world...or we end up on the receiving end of an asteroid or comet...or, well, you get the idea. Good question.

Because of machines, computers, calculators, robots, movies, computer games, television we will actually de-evolve to be less intelligent and this is actually happening right now. Humans are less intelligent than they were 50 years ago. There is a greater amount of knowledge discovered BUT test/admission scores have been lowered and there are less people attaining Phds
Currently a Master's degree today is equivalent to the 1960 standard of Bachelor's degree and today's Bachelor degree is equivalent to HS education. The problem is PHd standards cannot be lowered and there are much less Phds being completed. From 1960 through 1970 and each year onward the level of Phds have decreased worldwide.

the ambience would make certain. suitable the following is a primer on the R-ok concept. All living subject matters reproduce. some creatues have few offspring, severe intelligence, lengthy existence and make investments heavly in them(dolphins, elephants, primates). even as others produce large numbers of offsping, fairly dumb and make investments lots a lot less parental attempt in each guy or lady (Salmon, rabbits. etc). because of the undeniable truth that rabbits have an fairly severe lack of existence fee from preditors, suitable they reproduce like... suitable rabbits. If there's a severe disese(and therefore date fee from maleria and various pathigens) fee human beings will develop into idiotic, violent, short lived, instantly reproducing machines(imagine of the detention middle inhabitants without the detention middle). those with low reproductive expenditures will die off swifter than replenishment. If there's a low ailment and shortage of existence fee we are able to adapt into more suitable smart, lengthy lived, lots a lot less feritle human beings (imagine MIT scholars). those with severe repro/violence expenditures will all be incarcerated or killed by technique of genocide by technique of smarter human beings (There are dozens of circumstances of this contained contained in the previous 1000 years..you imagine human nature has replaced, imagine again). Unfortunatly global warming will advance the global lack of existence fee by technique of way of ailment, hence, human beings are going to adapt to be stupider over the subsequent thousand years or so. Guessing it truly is how Darwin could reply.

We are changing what it means to be "human" faster than evolution can operate. Evolution operates on genes by chance. We are doing so with purpose already. Cures based on direct manipulation of genes for a number of diseases, both inherited and acquired, are in animal or human trials.
There are thousands of human beings that have grown up with a cochlear implant, a computer that lets you hear, as an integral part of their brains and personalities. Sight replacement systems that interface directly with the nerves are in trial. There are a number of people controlling artificial limbs or computers by thinking at them.
Between our direct manipulation of the biology and our merging with the electronics, "humanity" at the end of this century is going to be something entirely different than what undirected evolution could achieve in millennia.

Only if being smarter/more intelligent actually provides a benefit to reproductive success, and there is an environmental selective pressure towards that success.

Unfortunately, looking around at the people who are procreating the most, and their intelligence levels, it seems that the Wal-Mart shopping, American Idol watching gene is being selected over any sort of inherited intelligence.

The Idiocracy may be upon us sooner than we think.

Perhaps, but consider. We work hard to give the weakest and dumbest and least apt to survive among us the most help. They would not have survived 400 years ago, but they do now. We spend more money on keeping them alive and SOMEWHAT happy than we spend on encouraging and empowering the best among us. We actually PUNISH and TAKE FROM the best among us and redistribute those resources to the worst.

Therefore, you might conclude that we will actually devolve in the future.

I believe so I recently read a book on humans saying that humans are related to all sorts of animals especially apes because apes are looking more human like during time goes by but people can not figure out why but scientists believe apes will evolde from humans in the next millennium so my answer again is yes.

We didn't evolve from monkeys! Monkeys, apes, and humans all evolved from something more primative than all three.

Perhaps you need to give more credit to the intelligence of the mokeys and apes.
