If your in the United States....The only things a former employer may release are 1 Did you fail or refuse to Take a drug / alcohol test....must have documentation..test must have been performed by a credible lab...2 your dates of employment...3.Would You be eligible for rehire. Any thing else could be a Violation of your Civil Rights..If your really worried about what they will say...Have a friend or family member call and pretend to represent a bogus company that is verifying your work history

Legally speaking, the only information that is allowed are the dates of employment, and the position filled... I'm not 100 percent sure, but the law is pretty strict and it's along those lines.

And no, your past employer can not tell them that you were fired by law, however, that may not prevent him or her from saying it.

Unfortunately since there is little anyone can do if a past employer breaches the law, in either case it may be a matter of continuing on your job search until you find someone who hires you, is the easiest way when comparing the alternatives.

Good luck

Past employers are only suppose to tell future employers how much you made, the postions you held and how long you worked there....now that is what they are suppose to do, it doesnt always mean that they will...I know when I was the hiring manager for a fortune 500 company that was our policy...hope this helps

They should only verify your dates of employment.
Some still reveal reasons for termination - but legally I don't think they're supposed to. In other words they can say whether or not you left voluntarily, but skip the details.
Hope this helps and good luck.
