Root canals don't feel much different than having a tooth filled. It takes more time to do and there is an annoying rubber dam that they put around the tooth that extends outside of your mouth that becomes a bit annoying during the proceedure. Other than that, it is a piece of cake.

The only part of having a root canal that hurts is the shot in the mouth to eliminate the pain. Ironic isn't it. After the local sets in, there is that mental pain & discomfort. First, they install a mouth jack that opens your mouth wider than you have ever imagined it would open. Then comes the sounds of power drills and the pressure of downward thrusts on your jaws. The thought of a construction job site with men & jackhammers and concrete flying everywhere all taking place inside this huge cavern on the front of your face now being forcebly held open by what feels like 4x4's. Other than the shot, lol, there's no physical pain to speak of.

I had one and it went like this: The dentist gave me three shots of a local anesthetic that felt like a mild pinch. Not nearly as bad as the mental intimidation of going into your mouth with a needle. He waited a few minutes for the anesthetic to take effect and then there was no pain involved at any further point in the process. The worst part is that it takes a little while (sorry, I don't remember exactly how long). Afterword you can feel the numbing effect of the anesthetic until it wears off and then you can feel a sensation in your mouth like something definitely went on in there, but it isn't painful and it wears off rapidly. Then you're good as new! In short, it is a minor procedure with absolutely nothing to worry about.
