Actually, fiddler crabs aren't freshwater. Some petstores sell them as such, and they can survive in freshwater for a while, but they will not thrive and will not live long in freshwater.

That said, you should go with ghost shrimp. They are one of the cheapest and easiest animals to keep. You can decorate the tank as you want to, but give them some plants (java moss is great for them and you can usually find that for free at fish stores, or with local hobbiests), maybe a piece of driftwood. Gravel, or sand, whatever you like. You don't need a filter, but you should get one anyway, because it'll mean less cleaning and cleaner, fresher water. You should also have a regular heater set to about 76F.
Start with a dozen ghost shrimp. Try finding them sold as feeder shrimp because they'll be MUCH cheaper. Then they will most like reproduce and you'll have very many more.

Another option would be red cherry shrimp. They are a little more expensive to begin with, but they are very easy to breed and do not require heat (unless you keep your house very cold) and they are very cute.

Either way, feed a variety of fish flake, fish pellets, algae wafer. Feed only a TINY bit each day. Shrimp don't eat much.

You can do normal weekly 25% water changes with a regular syphon tube - just be careful not to suck up any shrimp.

As usual, use water conditioner to dechlorinate your water.

I had ghost shrimp and they lived a long time. They're pretty cool and easy to take care of.

fiddlers taste the best out of the two.
