Safest bet is the main square (called "plaza de Armas" or "Plaza Mayor" in spanish). There you will see the government palace, the cathedral, San Francisco Church, the Osambela House, Congress, the old Inquisition and a bunch of other sites. The changing of the palace guard is at midday and, if you're still there at lunchtime, I recommend T'anta, behind the Municipality in "paseo de los escribanos").
If you are looking more for Inca or Pre-inca, try having lunch at "La Huaca" restaurant which is overlooking ann old pre-inca sanctuary in Miraflores. If you're a little more adventurous, you might try to get to Pachacamac, an old pre-inca and inca sanctuary.

If you just want to chill out, go to "Larco Mar" a great place full of restaurants and bars overlooking the sea (close to the Marriott Hotel) in the Miraflores district.

Hope that was helpful

Visit old downtown Lima (Cathedral, Main square, churches, Spanish Inquisition dungeon) during the morning. Then visit 1 or 2 of the important museums in Lima (Museo de la Nación, Museo de Oro, Museo Antropológico de Lima, etc.)

Lima is a pretty interesting city - but you need to be careful as it has some very dangerous areas. If you organise a transfer and accomodation through a reputable company you will find yourself in a good part of town where you can walk around and go shopping.

Get a taxi out to the Gold Museum too - as well as lots of gold they have erotic pottery (which has to be seen to be believed), firearms and other 'museum' type stuff. Definitely worth a visit.
