Infant car seat
Two to three newborn diapers
Going-home outfit (a good choice is a one-piece stretch suit)
Receiving blanket
Socks or booties
Cap or bonnet

For mom
A going-home outfit. Forget about making a fashion statement. No matter how much you'd like to squeeze back into your regular blue jeans, it's probably not going to happen. Bring something loose fitting and easy to put on. Remember to bring something loose fitting and easy to put on, plus some flat-soled shoes.
2-3 nursing bras, breast pads, sanitary pads (buy the super absorbent for the first few days), and several pairs of roomy underwear (if you are having a c-section make sure to bring panties that are high like granny panties, you don't want to go home in what the hospital gives you).
A bathrobe, slippers (with nonskid bottoms), a couple pair of socks, and two to three nighties that are easy to open if you plan to breastfeed.
toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, lotion, face creams, deodorant, and, for those who feel naked without it - makeup.
A portable CD player, Walkman® or book for relaxation.
Your birth plan, if you have developed one.
A camera/video camera, for someone to document the main event. Make sure ahead of time that this is in line with hospital policies.
Phone numbers of family members and friends you'll want to call.

For your partner or family member

Clothes, books, toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo.

What to leave at home
Jewelry or other valuables
Cash, credit cards

Less is more. Unless there's a problem, you should only be staying 2 nights. In our bag, we took clothes for the baby, blankets, bottles/pump/formula (I don't know if you're breast or bottle feeding). For myself, I took sweatpants and a t-shirt and sweatshirt, so I didn't have to wear a hospital gown and I just wore that home. I also took slippers/socks. I took a small travel shampoo/conditioner because each room had a shower in it. A brush. And, something to pull my hair back (headband/ponyholder). My camera, video camera and extra batteries for each.

It seems like a lot in writing, but it's not that much. The hospital provides diapers, wipes, clothes the baby can wear while there, and blankets.

Also, I found a good website too... scroll down part of the way to see the Packing for the Hospital list - http://www.sghs.org/body.cfm?id=139

Good luck!

You dont really need many clothes for baby, maybe some socks for him, and a onsie or two. They have onsies there that they put on the baby. You'll want your going home outfit though.

Pack all your toiletries. Like you would if you were going on vacation. Nix the smelly body washes though, they just irritate down below. Pack the clothes you wore at 6 months pregnant. They will be comfy right after birth, since thats about the size you go down to. Sweats are nice. Or pj bottoms. And plenty of clean undies and socks.

Thats really about it. I was in the hospital for 5 days, and didnt have enough underwear. THAT was a pain.

Jen is totally right. Pack your regular heavy period pads, the ones the hospital gives you are horrific. After the first night you really dont need those bulky terrible ones anymore.

I would take a set of clothes for you to wear home. Comfy ones, cause you'll still look and be about as big as you were around 5 months. Take a set of clothes to take baby home in. You'll want your tolietires for shower ect. Probably an extra pair of socks in case you get blood on the ones you'll probably want on during delivery. Maybe some cards or a book to read. Don't for get to make sure the car seat is in the car. You'll need it to take baby home. :)

If you don't have any complications and baby doesn't either, you should only be there 24 hrs after baby is born.

Good luck and God bless

i packed everything that was recommended in What to Expect When you are expecting (p. 328) but i found that i did not use most of it, aside from toiletries and your own jammies or robe (better than a hospital gown) you can bring things to entertain you if you bore easily (books, music etc) an outfit to go home in (you may still be a little puffy so maybe some of the maternity clothes you wore in early pregnancy), and a camera (!)

strechy clothes, address book, phone cards, CAMERA, makeup, lotions, shampoo, something for you to read, socks, slippers, robe, good things for labor are calming music, something to play the music on, paper fan, lip balm, suckers (ask dr first) and a sock with real rice in it. ( microwave for 1 min and it will hold the heat for about an hour) most L&D's won't allow water bottles or heating pads.

For baby, mostly just take home clothes and if they take pictures there then an outfit for that.

For you - extra underwear and couple pairs of jammies, socks, toiletries, shower stuff, pads, nursing bra, clothes to go home in, something to do when you are in labor, pillow, camera, list of names and numbers to call people after the baby is born. Don't forget the baby book so you can get their hands and feet stamped.
Good luck.

For baby: lots of diapers, baby wipes, a good quality diaper rash cream (my son got really bad diaper rash in the hospital), baby clothes (sleepers, socks, diaper shirts, booties, scratch mits, hat, etc.), a few receiving blankets, warm baby blanket, car seat, etc.

For you: robe, warm socks, slippers, change of clothes, night gown, underwear, nursing bra, nursing pads (definitly don't forget these), overnight pads, shampoo and conditioner, soap, comb, bottled water, money, etc.

Good luck!
