I have all of the sudden developed an incredible fear of tsunamis. I have at least one nightmare about them a week. This has all developed over the past 3 or 4 months. I have always known of tsunamis but I guess never realized how horrible they can be and how often they really happen. My husband and I went to Hawaii for our honeymoon a year and a half ago. I was perfectly fine. The thought of a tsunami happening never even crossed my mind (like I said this all started just months ago). Me & my husband have always loved the ocean and when we go on vacation we always love to go to the beach. I don't want this fear to ruin vacations to the beach for me. I fear taking our two year old daughter to the beach. I keep reading about them and watching videos of them (I KNOW that couldn't be good for me). I have not been back to the ocean since this has been going on. Anyone else out there with this kind of fear? Any suggestions?

Well i know i used to dream of tsunamis all the time. I learned that that is a sign that you find something in your life overwhelming. You may not consciously know it but it comes out in your dreams. That said, phobias can be as debilitating as any disease. let's see..

1. Do you live around water? I for instance live on an island. The fear of a rogue wave washing me away is actually a very real one. If this is the case for you,do a little research. Has a wave ever hit your area? How is your city prepared? Knowledge is power. If you don't live near water, your fear is pretty irrational and you will want to research this as well.
2.Vacations. Your daughter will not be deprived of anything as long as she has happy healthy parents. She will be unhappier if you take her to a place you don't like because you think she's missing out. Go to places that have pools and man made beaches. Have your hubby take her to a "real" beach one day while you go shop. Don't be a martyr to your child she won't thank you for it later.
3.control. Ultimately the best advice i was ever given was to worry about things you can control. You can't control an event like a tidal wave so worrying about it is useless. Instead plan the best you can to be prepared for disasters and give yourself a break.

Good Luck!

I suggest you speak to a professional about this fear before it becomes an unmanagable phobia

Live life to the fullest.....and run like hell to high ground if the water level suddenly drops.
