I'm certain that it is the persuit of happiness.. Which hand in hand works with avoiding pain. Everybody does it, in different ways, be it work, sex, love, drugs, music, prayer, meditation, TV, hobbies.. Although as people are deluded, we all unintentionally do things which create pain and suffering. People are also greedy and generally incontent/ungrateful, so this throws more dialemmas in the bag- the more happiness you find, the more happiness you will lose. Some people want happiness so much they will hurt others in order to achieve it. The more happiness you experience, the more addicted to it you become & you will need more and more to be satisfied until it cannot be satisfied anymore. Attachment to pleasureable things and avoidance of unpleasent things generally brings suffering, due to the imperminant nature of existance. Everything with a beginning has an end.
Example 1- Drug 'X' makes me happy. It makes me forget about pain. I lay about doing as I like whilst enjoying it.. I'm happier than ever before... I'm running low on drug 'X'! Argh! Gotta get some more or I won't be happy again. I'm out of money! Argh! I'm unhappy again. Need drug 'X'! Urgh life is so hopeless, I feel so much pain now I'm off it! I'll never be that happy again! Can't go on without drug 'X'! ~Kills people in persuit of drug 'X'~ Oh god what have I done!? I hate myself, I hate life.. ~Kills self~.
Don't do drug 'X'.... ;)

The point of my life is to enjoy it, to try to improve it a bit, and hopefully leave the world a better place than when I came in. That means volunteering my time and donating my money to causes that I think are worthwhile, while also doing things that I enjoy, whether as recreation, learning, seeing, or just thinking about. And if those worthwhile causes overlap with the list of enjoyable things, that's a bonus.
For example - I enjoy being outdoors - camping, hiking, cycling, etc. I used to be a Boy Scouting leader. This let me donate my time to a very worthwhile cause, and get outdoors as well. In the process, I learned a lot of skills that help me now that I'm no longer involved in scouting. It's like a triple word score in Scrabble!

NO! Not at all! The point of life is to love God (who created us) and enjoy Him forever in a way that fulfills our nature (the way He created us to be). Sin being in the world causes the pain and suffering but God is with those who suffer and if they acknowledge Him, He will make a way for them to deal with in with peace. (Jer. 29:11, Phillipians 4:6-8; Proverbs 3:5-10)
