The mughal empire was founded by the timurid prince babur in 1504 when he took over certain area of khorasan and kabul. In 1526 at the first battle of panipat he defeated the last of the delhi sultans.
The empire expanded and enjoyed consolidation till 1707 and survived till 1857. The word mughal comes from the persian language we would best no this group of people as mongols.
The mongols where generally central asian nomads who say they decended from warriors of Genghis Khan.

The Mughal Empire which was also the self-designation of the Timurids in Central Asia and Khorasan) was an empire that at its greatest territorial extent ruled eastern parts of Khorasan (i.e. Afghanistan) and most of the Indian subcontinent, then known as Hindustan, i.e. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

It was established in 1504 by the Timurid prince Babur, when he took control of Kabul and eastern regions of Khorasan. In 1526, he defeated Ibrahim Lodi, the last of the Delhi Sultans, at the First Battle of Panipat. It enjoyed expansion and consolidation until about 1707 and survived, even if in drastically attenuated form, until 1857. Mughal is the Persian word for Mongol, and was generally used to refer to Central Asian nomads who claimed descent from the Mongol warriors of Genghis Khan. The Mughal rulers were adherents of Islam.

The territory was largely conquered by the Pashtun Sher Shah Suri during the time of Humayun, the second Mughal ruler, but under Akbar the Great it grew considerably, and continued to grow until the end of Aurangzeb's rule. Jahangir, the son of Mughal Emperor Akbar and Rajput princess Mariam-uz-Zamani, ruled the empire from 1605–1627. In October 1627, Shah Jahan, the son of Mughal Emperor Jahangir and Rajput princess Manmati, succeeded to the throne, where he inherited a vast and rich empire in India; and at mid-century this was perhaps the greatest empire in the world. Shah Jahan commissioned the famous Taj Mahal (between 1630–1653), in Agra as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their 14th child.

Actually every one has given answer from internet.as i have studied history according to me mughal empire was not created solely by babur but the invasion s or attempts to conquer iIndia began with the Delhi sultanate rule in india in early 13 century .With the passage of time came another dynastieslike mamluks, lodies, khiljies, etc.they couldnot stay for long periods but they gave something or the other in their tenure which gradually developed and helped in foundation of later empires(mughal empire),like architecture, currency system, administration, most importantly, agrarian syastem, taxation .like in the course of history feudal sys developed into iqtadari sys. and it develop into mansbdari and jagirdari system.like this their are many examples. At the time of mughals the system was more established and also helped to expand and centralise. Most important rulerwas Akbar who followed the policy of centralising and uniting the empire, with strengthened admnistration, military system.and his relations with other rulers of the country.
This is how I think slowly and gradually the mughal empire got laid its foundation .

India was always a hot cake for Muslims. Nadir Shah, Sher Shan, Md. Gajnabi, Md. Gauri many of them attacked india in different period. The explioted india and returned. None of them very long sighted.
Babar, was an ambitious and inteligent emperor, he came to India to establish his empire here. India that time was divided into many small kingdoms of rajputs and other different religion. Babur entered india through afghan and slowly and steady he established his empire in nothern region. After him his son, Humanyu who was himself a great administrator, continued the work left by his father. Then at the period of Akbar the whole scenario changed. Akbar was a soft hearted king. He knew well that this is a country of Hinduism and to adminster this country something else was required. He made relations with many Royal Families. He himself married a hindu girl "Jodha". These type of steps made in popular in whole country and he united whole india under him. Akbar was probably the first Emporer of United India. It was then the Mughal Empire established. For years akbar rules this country. After Akbar, Jahangir and after him his son Shahajahan ruled the country but they were not as good as akbar. So slowing the tie of mughal empire unfastened. Then in period of aurangjeb, who was not at all liked by hindus as he was a cruel and "Kattar" king, many kings in india opposed him. Many of them united and faught with aurangjab. The Mughal Empire was in its desending stage. Till then the Portuges, Franch and the Britishers had also arrived in india as traders. Britishers came here to rule the country. They were very strong, strong enough to defect the mughal army. Bahadurshah Jafar was the last emperor of Mughul empire. He was very old and weak and in his period the Mughul empire demonished.

They are Muslims who came to India through the Khaiber pass of North-West Himalayas and invaded and looted wealth from the Indian Temples. Ghazni Mohammed and Ghori Mohammed were the main such invaders as per history. The Somanath Temple of Gujarath was attacked seventeen times as per the History. Prithviraj Chouhan and Rana Pratap Singh were the Kings of India who fought well and defeated them many times.
But the tactice of crooked warfare finally divided the unity of Indians and few tempted by the offers of wealth and women fought against their own countrymen and thus Mughals could estabish their Kingdom in India. Babar.. Humayun...Akbar and
Aurangajeb were among the few well known Kings who kept expanding their kingdom with the help of anti national eliments. It was later when Shivaji Maharaj from Maharashtra and Guru Tej Bahadur and Guru Govind Singh from Punjab who fought well with them and after the arrival of Britishers (East India Company) they with their way of divide and rule defeated Muslim Kings and established their Govt.
