For the south and southeast, it officially started March 1st and runs through June 1st; from about June 1 to September 1st, the north and the northeast see them the most. However, tornadoes can occur anytime, anywhere when the conditions are favorable. I've lived in Texas most of my life and we have a little small "severe storm season" in October too.

It has started a tad bit early. The REAL tornadic season doesn't begin until late this month or Early April...but considering Mother Nature, anything can change in a snap of a finger.

They can happen any time warm and cold fronts collide. Usually spring is the hot time, but I've even seen bad ones in January. A few years ago downtown Clarksville, TN was hammered shortly after New Years Day.

Actually, in Alabama, we will get tornadoes from November through May. So the outburst yesterday was not that unusual.

It said on the news last night that there was warm air coming from the ocean and arctic air mixing with it. Always a deadly combination!
