OK, so i have done a fresh install of Windows Xp Pro, on a freinds laptop, he had 137 Viruses on his pc, so the set up all went perfectly.

Then i come to connect it to the internet with the ethernet cable, ran the ntl setup disk, wont work, it will connect fine though, with a usb lead.

So i connected to the net with a usb lead, updated the drivers for the modem, tried running it again. doesnt work.
Problem is, his PC has to connect using ethernet, and also he doesnt have the correct leads.

When i unplug the ethernet cable, i get a prompt saying, "network connection unplugged", and in the network status it says it is connected.

The NTL installer says it cannot complete installation due to DHCP problems, and an unrecoverable IP

HELP!

if windows says 'network connection unplugged' then forget about reinstalling the drivers for few moments.

From you description i think its about IP configuration problem, try to set a manual ip (i hope you know how to) , check all necessary service are running. you can disable DHCP Client service if you r going to setup a manual IP.

Hope you will understand something usefull to solve.

I know this sound obvious but have you reinstalled the Ethernet card drivers also is DHCP enabled to find out open the control panel click "administrative tools" then sevices scroll down to DHCP it should say started if it says stopped right click on DHCP click properties in the start up type box change it to automatic

Is it failing to %. up the prompt connection or the prompt adapter isn't yet completely put in. If its the "community accss basically" problem after connecting to the prompt community. attempt to make valuable that your device has the valid TCP/IP protocol and of which it has an ip handle, subnet mask & default gateway. to confirm those issues bypass to commence>then variety cmd (interior the quest field) and press enter> interior the black demonstrate (command prompt)>variety ipconfig> then see if the three issues that i discussed are there. in the event that they are not there variety in ipconfig /renew and then restart your device.
