For the immigrants of the crowded European cities the Wild Wild West with the unlimited space and abundance of land must have seemed like heaven. The removal of the feudal systems, and free from Kings, Dukes and Lords, the ability to practice and choose a religion, and make ones own way. The abundance of freedom, and limitless possibilities.

A Deserted Frontier Town is the classic image of the Wild Wild West.
People came here to make a fortune in gold or silver. They lived hard and loose. And in the end it wasn't the external nature that conquered them, they were conquered by their own wild, wild natures.
The Rise a Fall of a Ghost Town.

I think one of the main things about the wild west is since there were not enough law men around people took care of business on their own , fights , shootouts , etc . Also the traveling and hardships in reaching their destinations . I also believe Indian attacks such as you see in movies are in reality blown out of proportion and didn't happen nearly as often as sometimes portrayed .

I would have to say the harshness of the land itself.I live outside Tucson AZ. I can tell you first hand, it's very unforgiving land. That and the fact that there was very little if any law out here.Between the Indians (good and bad). and the miners who had become increasingly desperate/broke. A gun was your best friend. So its your call as to what really represents the old west

Wild horses running free, a cowboy staring into a campfire, and a lonesome cabin in the middle of the prairie.

The winchester lever action rifle.
Hands down.
Runner up No.1 is the Colt 45 peacemaker.
Runner up No.2 could be a standalone building with "Saloon" on the sign.
Runner up No.3 would be barbed wire.
