It lies in between the Middle East and Europe.
Historically, the political influence of both Islamic East and the Secularist West have fought a battle of control and ideology for Turkey's soul.
With the Military Coup in 1982 (I think it was 82) the secularist have held an iron grip on Turkey. However, the Islamic influences are still very strong and challenges to the standing government occur often.
Turkey has long held a very desirable Geographical location. Easy access to Europe, Russia and the Middle East. This allowed the Ottomans to grow one of the largest empires in history and hold it from the center point of Istanbul.
Turkey held Russia in check from gaining a warm water access (ie year round) by keeping the Dardenelles and controlling the access to and from the Black Sea.
Also, Turkey played a dynamic role in the Cold War. The only friendly nation to have a long border with the Soviets Turkey was loaded with NATO money, material (nuclear missiles even) and manpower to prevent the growth of Communism into the Middle East.
Turkey's path in the future appears to lie with a greater leaning towards the west with EU membership, a tacit military and economic agreement with Israel and a continuing of the secularist policies in the government.

Aside from its position literally at the meeting point of Europe, the Middle East, and northern Asia, it is the one Muslim nation that has managed to suppress the Imams and create a secular seperation from Islam in the government. It is a nominal democracy and actually has a defensive alliance with Israel. It has carefully balanced its desire to become more modern and western with slowly changing the culture to accept that rather than suffer a revolution like Iran. I believe that Bush is trying to model Iraq and Afghanistan after that system (though not very successfully at this time). Moving the Middle East to secular governments is the best hope of creating stability there.
