at least three. One near the furnace, one on the main level and one on the second floor in proximity to all bedrooms. If the bedrooms are a distance away from one another, you might have more peace of mind by having a detector in proximity to each bedroom. When you are talking about the safety and security of your family, there is no such thing as too many. There is such thing as too few.

You need one one on each floor and within 10 feet of every bedroom and in any location where you have a power vented appliance.

Three...one for each floor. The one in the basement is really important, since your furnace, etc. are down there.
