All Castor oil will give you is severe cramping and the runs. Sorry.

Castor Oil is not a recommended method to get labor started. It's intended purpose is as a laxative. You will likely develop diarrhea and possible cramping. This cramping is what is thought to get contractions started. A dangerous side effect is dehydration which can also start contractions. However, if you go to the hospital with these contractions, what will happen is they will re-hydrate you and the contractions will stop. Every mom-to-be hits that point when they just want their baby to get here already. But, from a mom who had 4 babies all born past their due dates (5-11 days late), there really isn't anything that you can do to make your body go into labor before it and your baby are ready. Sorry, you'll have to wait on him, there is no other way. There have also been some studies that suggest taking Castor oil increases the risk of your baby passing meconium before birth which has a potential to get in his lungs causing some problems. I would not take it based solely on the potential risk to my baby. Babies can come anytime between 37-42 weeks and be considered at term. Meanwhile, you can try walking, having sex, and eating spicy foods. These are all perfectly safe, but mainly are just for passing time since none of them worked for me. Neither did driving down bumpy dirt roads or washing floors on my hands and knees (my grandma's personal favorite). All of these things are Old Wives' Tales and have no scientific proof they work. With my 3rd baby, I was 100 % effaced and dilated 2-3 centimeters for 3 weeks before I went into labor.

As far as the issue of safety is concerned, it is not especially unsafe. It is however, very uncomfortable and not very effective. It can lead to very strong rectal cramps which because the muscles to the anus and cervix are somewhat sympathetic, it can cause contractions. Ineffective contractions while you are on the toilet with severe diarrhea and I'd say 50% of the time vomiting. This sometimes kicks in labour and sometimes does not. If it does start labour, you are likely exhausted, dehydrated and uncomfortable- not a good way to start. And if it does not start labour, then you are exhausted, dehydrated, uncomfortable and that's it.

It is good that you are sick of being pregnant! This is mother nature's way of ensuring that we will actually go into labour willingly! As you are well aware, it gets to the point that if someone suggested a horrible "cure" to end this pregnancy, you'd seriously consider it! :) Can you imagine contemplating diarrhea and cramps a month ago?

My advice to you is this. Get ready for baby, take time for yourself now, because it will be hard to soak in the tub and get a facial in a few weeks. Watch junky TV, go to the movies etc etc. Distract yourself and enjoy yourself. Like they say a watched pot never boils.

Hang in there, and happy birthing.

You should not even consider using castor oil until you have reached your due date.

Is castor oil safe?
There are conflicting reports on the safety of castor oil. Some reports were shown to show a correlation between meconium in the amniotic fluid and castor oil. However, many others believe that it is more a co-occuring symptom of overdue babies. Castor oil is used most frequently in overdue pregnancies. Since overdue babies have an increased chance of having meconium in the amniotic fluid, many believe the overdue baby is the cause of the meconium and not the castor oil.

Honey my sister tried this with her 1st and all she got from it was cramps and really runny stool.. If you are that ready to have the baby try walking.. Or stimulating your nipples.. That has been known to start contractions.. Best of Luck..

Not entirely UNsafe, but there are better ways to get things going. The best homeopathic way is using primrose oil. Rub it gently along your cervix a couple times a day....believe me, in a day or two, you'll be delivering.

try walking, having sex or stimulating your nipples, I have heard all of those work.

I've also heard of the castor oil but it will make you crap everywhere.

Its not safe, thats why people tell you not to try it. It causes false contractions by creating intestinal distress. It dehydrates you, because its a natural laxative.

So if it does work, which generally it doesnt, you will be exhausted, irritated (ESPECIALLY if you have hemorrhoids) and dehydrated.

Try walking, stimulating your nipples, and having sex. It really will happen when its time. Dont worry.

If you have a breast pump use it, it will bring on contractions. I did it with me last baby all day of and on the next day I had him. Good luck.
