my baby brother just turned 1 year and he had the same problem. the tear duct in his right eye wasnt open, which caused his eye to be watery and full of mucus. he just recently went into the doctors and had 'surgery' t have it fixed. it was only about 10 minutes long, and now his eye is fine.

Don't worry. It's probably just a blocked tear duct. My daughter had one when she was just a few weeks old. The best thing to do is to use a wet, warm wash cloth or cotton ball (or even your pinky finger) to massage around the eye. Start at the corner of the eye by the nose and work your way down the side of the nose.

Here's a link to a site with some information and a diagram of the eye, nose, and tear duct so you can see better where the obstructions usually are and where you need to massage.

Hope this helps you some. Good luck.

FYI, it took about a month for my daughter's eye to clear up, so just keep at it.

Could just be an eye infection or he could have what's called a blocked tear duct. The watering is very common with that. Although now that there is goop in the eye, you need to call the doc to see if they want to see him. Some docs may tell you to clean his eye w/ a cotton ball moistened w/ warm water. Clean from the inner corner outward. You may need to do this several times per day for several days. Other docs like to see them first as he may need a medication to put in his eye to clear the mucus. If it is a blcked tear duct they usually recommend an eye massage(they will show you how). This usually clears on it's own, if not they will do what's called a probe, basically they open the tearduct. They usually don't do this until 12-18 months.

This sounds like a clogged tear duct. My son had both of his tear ducts clogged from birth, and while one of them cleared up on its own (they usually do), the other one required surgery to open it up. I had to wait until he was around eight months old, because it required that he be put under general anesthesia and they prefer to wait until the baby is older and better able to handle it. His eyes have both been clear ever since.

We went through a lot of cotton balls before the surgery, though, constantly wiping his eyes clean with warm, wet cotton balls.

Ask your baby's doctor if he thinks your baby has a clogged tear duct. Good luck!

you need to massage with a warm wash cloth in the corner of the babys eye to try and open the tear duct. If that does not work and there is still a lot of watering then he possibly might have to get it surgically unblocked.

He may have a clogged tear duct. If you gently massage the inner corner of his eye this helps to clear it up. As far a being common, it is. If you take him to an opthomologist they will suggest the massaging first and if it doesn't work they may want to open it with a probe. My daughter had this and I just massaged it until it went away. Also warm compresses help.

Yes!My doctor said that it's common for babys' eyes to 'matt' up shortly after they are born. 2 of my 4 children did this. This is why
they put saline drops in their eyes when they're born. Here's what to do: Take a soft cloth & wet it w/lukewarm water. gently wipe from inside corner of eye to outside. do this every so often or as needed. It should clear up within a wk or so.

My oldest daughter had the same problem...it was a clogged tear duct and they were able to open it up right there in the doctors office no pain no problems...take him to his doctor where most times they can open it up right there(on occasion especially if they are older it may need a minor surgery)

My son, who just turned 7 weeks, had that same problem but it went away last week. He would have yellow eye crusties as well but I just wiped those away and his eyes quit watering on their own.

Yes. About 75% of all babies get clogged tear ducts, and slight eye infections from bacteria they are exposed to at birth.

Your doctor will have a simple drop or gel for you to put in his eye to clear it up. The clogged duct will clear itself in a few months, its not a risk to his health.
