Probably because the soul is not there any longer so it is lighter...lol

The density of the human body is almost the same as water. It's actually a little bit more, which means you're likely to sink unless you are packing a lot of body fat [which floats] or breathe in deeply. When you die, you'll probably fill with water, lungs, stomach and other hollow bits.

This is useful if you're a Mafia Boss trying to get rid of a body. ahem. However, as the body begins to decompose, methane and carbon dioxide is produced, bloating the body with bouyant gases. After a week or so the body floats and you've not even gotten to Rio yet and are looking at a jail term.

The solution. Give your victim a concrete overcoat, or at least boots made of cement.

Curiously, this U-boat quality of human bodies is why aircraft seats are designed to float. It's likely you have your lap belt on when you assume the crash position. If the plane comes down on water and breaks up but not so hard to smash everything to little bits, your body will be strapped to the seat and they'll find your body. If the seat sank and you were killed, they'd have to wait a few weeks for you to come back up. Long after, the search has ended and probably drifted far from the search area.

Yeuk. What a morose question and frankly, terrible answer

The others are right. As a body decomposes, a gas is produced by the bacteria feeding off of it. That's why it usually takes a couple of days before the body is light enough to float.

if its not the bacteria in the bodey causing bloating from the gasses produced like when a carton of outdated milk bloats out before you open it and die from the foul stink then maybe its the soul trying to float off towards the light to heaven. i dont think that would happen if they was wearing anti gravity boots though the bodey would be floating in the opposite direction to the bottom of the sea, lake or river hook line and stinker. :)
