I'm not sure what you mean by dedicated video? Can you explain?

Yes, stick with XP for now. Make sure that you get the largest harddrive size you can and also 1GB minimum memory.

Dedicated video RAM is independant of your main processor memeory. Many laptops tend to share the CPU memory with the graphic processor. This is not the best situation as it can slow the system down as both CPU and graphic processor are competing for the buses on the motherboard.

I tend to upgrade to a new operating system once the first service pack has been launched.

The above answer is correct but you don't need dedicated graphics to run vista. I rang intel 2 weeks ago about which ones of their chipsets fuly support vista. They told me only one would run the 'aeros' of vista and that is the 950 GMA. Can't comment on other graphics/video manufacturers but if you want a laptop with a dedicated video/graphics you will be looking at over £800. I recently bought a new laptop which has a free upgrade to vista. Still haven't applied for it yet.

Yes, XP is the mature operating system. You can upgrade at a later date once the problems are worked out of Vista. Make sure the hardware you buy will be up to the rigors of Vista later. 1GB memory, dedicated video and large hard drive.
