Well if you are ever unsure you can always just drop the in/on and use "the".

For instance: Ride the horse, ride the train....ah oh...never mind because it would sound silly to say Ride the car. So....maybe it boils down to where you are in conjunction with the thing you are riding. You are literally ON a horse not IN a horse. You are riding IN the car and not ON it. But when it comes to trains and subways you usually hear people say they took a ride on a train or on the subway.

So in conclusion there are no set rules to go by...but that's English for you. And even if there was a set rule there would always be an exception to it. I truly think it has got to be one the most difficult languages to learn.

You can ride on a train too. But you don't ride on a car, you ride in a car. You can ride in a boat, if you want. Like, you ride in a rowboat, because you're inside it.

I don't think there is any rule. You just gotta here the language enough and learn it. You can use "in" or "on" in many cases, and even if you use the wrong one, people will know what you mean.

I use them just about the same. I wouldnt say ride in a bike but I would say rode on a train or riding in a train. I guess it just depends on how and what you are using it for.

It depends on whether the means of transportation is open or closed, private or public: in a taxi, in a car, on a bus, on a plane, on a train, on a cart, on a horse, on a row boat, on a ship, in a private ship.
