IN mexico and south america, american music is sooo popular, they listen to it even if they don't understand a word of it. But i don't see much of this happening in America. I never hear any non hispanic American or Asian american person or African american listening to mexican music. And i don't mean shakira, and enrique iglesias stuff which is pushed on by MTv. I mean, mariachi music, or Mexican ballads, or Tejano music or whatever else.

Honestly i have never ever met any American who listens to it. I know, however, many Americans like japanese music especially if they are anime freaks or jpop freaks. So why is it americans have no interest in hispanic music...as much as south american countries have interest in American music?

Mariachi music is actually popular and of interest to many people. More of a curiosity than anything else. I think it is true that you won't find many non-Hispanics listening to Mariachi music in their car CD players.

Aaron Copland, whom many consider the pioneer of American music, spent considerable time in Mexico and was greatly influenced by Mariachi music. In fact, Copland composed a work entitled "El Salon Mexico."

Many musicologists are now recognizing the sophistication and validity of mariachi music, and have elevated it to the level of a genre of Classical music. Now, I am not talking about the Norteno music that you hear in mexican taverns, but the real Mariachi music which dates back to the 19th Century.

Matter of choice -
I am not Hispanic but love Hispanic music - much of it Mexican and not just the popular stuff. I really enjoy mariachi music and I especially love discovering new alt Mexican music like Kinky and Cafe Tacuba.
Meanwhile I know plenty of Hispanics who never listen to Hispanic or Mexican music.
It's just a matter of taste an choice - you like what you like. I would not say that Americans have no interest in Hispanic music - no way.

Music of other parts of the world is not to be found on radio stations in many parts of the U.S. and not readily found in most record stores, so you can't blame most Americans for never having the opportunity to hear any of this music. However, when I am in Texas, as I am from time to time, I do listen to some Mexican and Tejano music on the radio. I can't understand the lyrics or the disk jockeys, but the music is good.

I like Hispanic music, Mana, Julieta Venegas and Alejandro Sanz are some of my favs. I can't stand Ricky Martin, Enrique or Marc Anthony and the like.

I think that perhaps American music is so popular in other countries is because American pop culture is the what dominates right now.

Mostly only Mexicans listen to mariachi and tejano music, all other latinos listen to stuff like salsa... So if non-mexican latinos don't listen to mexican music too much, you can't really expect non-latinos to listen to mexican music either...

I know I do. I love Tejano and Mexican music. You can groove. Athough I do not understand the lyrics, my body understands the music! :-) And YES I am AMERICAN. :-)
