Try searching for "scanlations". These are the fansubs of manga. They are Japanese manga that have been translated into English (and other languages too). The downloads are free until the manga is licensed in the US. They are usually direct downloads through your browser or bit torrent. There are a few that are IRC only, but not too many.
Here, this the easiest way to start:

That is a link to my favorite scanlations group. Go through theirs, get what you want, then go to links and go to the next scanlations group and repeat. It will lead you on a path of filling your hard drive with endless Japanese manga.
You will need a PNG viewer, but most Windows and Mac computers come with one built in. You will also need a ZIP program to unzip them. Again, that is normally automatic on any machine these days. If not go to download.com and download and install one from there.

Anime Eden .com, they have a lot of free comic to download, and you don't need to download all those torrents
