The purpose of reincarnation is to give people a reason to be good people. The Hindus (and Buddhists) believe that karma determines how you will be reincarnated, whereas karma is the sum of all the good and bad in your life. So be good because the better a life you lead, the better your next life may be. Your friend probably wants to live life as a deer, I may not be surprised to find that under pressure, so doesn't truly believe it.
And it's not two chances, it's as many as it takes until a person can live a wholly good life, then they are off the circle.

Reincarnation is the way we work through, and hopefully correct, our mistakes. It is the way in which we become aware that we truly are one with All-That-Is. It is a process of becoming.

We learn from experience, so we have the opportunity to experience many lifetimes, sometimes as male, sometimes as female. We simply keep reincarnating until we no longer have mistakes to correct or new things to learn. That is a very simplified explanation but I think it captures the essence of what reincarnation is.

It is ridiculous to think that we have only one chance to get it right.

BTW, historically, the concept of coming back as an animal is called "Transmigration of Souls" -- and I do not think such a thing is possible.

Depends on your past choices.
If you have failed to learn a particular lesson in past lives than you will have to go through the pain again until you do learn.
Sometime benevolent souls incarnate out of compassion to be teachers for humanity though the vast majority are attending 'the school' of Earth as students.
Our goal is of course to graduate 'this' school and move on to other spheres.

The answer is in the question...people don't like the idea of a final end. They prefer to think they will have another chance.

becuase as humans, the majority of us cannot fully understand death and not existing. they've become so accustom to life and the everyday process it entails that the thought of a sudden end to all is bogus. i guess it's a nice way to look out on life, always have a hope for something. but the sad truth is, the end isn't going to be that way.
