I think that the greatest guitar hero of all time is Dick Dale. He is the first person to use a 100 watt guitar amp. This guy is amazing. If you watch any video of his, watch his fingers... It's crazy. There are alot of great guitarists, but guaranteed, Dick Dale is one of their influences. Much like Jimi Hendrix, he played his guitar upside down.

Zakk Wylde seems to be carrying the torch these days although he hasn't done anything remotely interesting since Ozzy's Ozmosis album. There are a lot of talented guitarists in the current metal scene with bands like Trivium and Dragonforce.
The only problem is that they play almost too good. It all seems overly technical and uninteresting.

Because stage presence and songwriting aren't important anymore, the age of the guitar hero may be over.
