Well for starters the countries that we are supposed to have lost control of were part of the British empire, not an English empire ,an empire that was built with the the full and active participation of the Scots, from civil servants, engineers soldiers labourers,Presbyterian ministers to plantation owners,...have you ever wondered why some people from the Caribbean have the name Campbell or Stewart? well my Caledonia friend it's because your ancestors had slaves working on their plantations, and because some of you ancestors fathered illegitimate children with the women who worked on their plantations. Many Scottish regiments fought their way across the globe as the empire expanded and indeed fought their way back to Bonny Scotland as the empire faded,as for all Scots not liking the English well that's patently untrue I have 2 Scots who have married into my family ...not much sign of hate there!...one of which has lived in England for over 60yrs,having fought against the Nazis in WW2 defending the freedom that you enjoy today ,he fought in the bloody air born assaults at Merville an later at chateaux blanc, not for Scotland and not for England but for his family and his freedom and for the men who fought and died along side him,English,Irish, and Welshmen ,unlike you he is a proud and Honourable man who has no prejudice against anyone least of all the English, just about every Scot I've met has been an intelligent ,humorous, and decent human being, perhaps it's a measure of the English that so many Scots live in England ?
I suggest you read a few history books and don't accept the Mel Gibson version of events as being the last word in British history. As for other nations liking or disliking the English well that's up to them and I'm sure they don't need you speaking on their behalf.
Dieu et mon Droit...look it up.

You are mistaken. The English are under no illusion that anybody else likes them. That's why they're so uptight.
You really need to get over this the-English-enslaved-us thing. Ireland has been a republic since 1949, and its worst enemy now is itself. The Scots have their own parliament, if not actual independence, plus thriving industry and a fantastic culture. This constant harping on about the English...nobody else cares, beyond a few nutters, so what's behind it? Jealous of the fact that they actually managed to get an empire? Think that if you'd controlled the countries, you wouldn't have treated the inhabitants like crap? Irish and Scottish soliders and administrators were among the most loyal servants of colonialism. Grow up.

The answers to this question is mind boggling. For one thing holding a grudge is quiet easy when the the grudgee is unapologetic and arrogant to the point of a near god complex. Individually the English are some of the nicest people you will meet. However, as a group they are more inconsiderate and appear not to care what affect they are having on others around them. The same can be said about the French and Americans, its more of an imperial side affect than anything intentially malicious.
Saying the Irish were savages? How many people did the English kill in the civilising process? We had the Brehon laws, a liberal clergy, and Irish women were treated equally before the English started thundering in. We started fighting each other becuase of the actions you had taken in regard to the North, but we got over that quickly. We now have a stronger economy, we are a richer people, we have lower unemployment and have a better relationship with other nations.
We don't need an apology, we no longer want one, because we are better than the English, we are more respectful of others and we will take the higher ground and I am proud of that.

I'm a proud and patriotic Scot, and I have to say some of my best friends are English, my brother-in-law is English and my grandmother on my father's side was a Londoner. So I certainly don't hate English people in general (although I certainly wouldn't support any of their sports teams - but that's just living up to a tongue in cheek stereotype more than anything).
It should also be remembered that historically there were many atrocities committed on both sides, and also a lot has been blamed on the English that they weren't solely responsible for. E.g. the battle of Culloden was not a battle between England and Scotland as is the common misconception. It was a battle between the Catholic Jacobites and the British army (most of whom were from central and southern Scotland) fighting for a Protestant government and crown.
And as for being blamed for the misdeeds of the British Empire, I think you'll find that Scottish troops were just as much involved in that as English, perhaps more so.
So Scots by all means should be proud and patriotic about their country, and the atrocities of the past both committed against us and by us should never be forgotten. We shouldn't, however, hate anybody in my book. A whole people or nation can't be held responsible for its history. That would be like blaming a child for a crime committed by his or her grandparents

It's kind of crazy to blame what England did or did not do hundreds of years ago, and having a grudge against the Empire is a bit silly these days since there is no more empire but remember if England had not built it's empire lots of countries would be speaking either French or Spanish and their Empire were a whole lot more brutal.
And your very wrong about Americans most Americans see the UK as their only friends in this world and we are equals brothers in fact, yes we had a spat in the war of independance but Britian knew the game was up and as soon as possible normalised relationships with the States, its only a few Pig headed Englishmen that harp on about Britians greatness these days just as Irishmen harp on about William of Orange or Scotsman about Bonnie Prince Charlie it's all history its all gone nothing worth getting steam up about.
Now if you talk modern day politics and what our organised crime syndicate at Westminster is doing to us you really have got somthing to moan about

I am English and proud of it. I have never had any reason to dislike Irish or Scots people and I have never had any reason to believe that irish or Scots people dislike me. In fact I have a great deal of affection for Scotland in particular. Easily the best country in the world in which to play golf.
I must say though, having read some of the answers to this question from the likes of Exceptionally Annoying, it is almost enough to make me ashamed to be English. We fought a world war to rid ourselves of Hitler and his Nazis. We recently have fought in another war to rid the world of Saddam Hussein. But the attitudes of these evil dictators seem to get perpetuated through the ignorance of people like Exceptionally Annoying and his ilk.
Its very saddening that some people still have that kind of mind set in this day and age.

I agree with (most) of the sentiments from 'eorpach'!
I completely disagree with most of your answers that put all this down to 'ancient history'! or to the fact that Scots, Welsh, and Irish were involved .
To clear up the first point, it is not all 'ancient' ! Old I may be but I've got a few more years before I can be considered ancient.
I was in the army on active service in Cyprus, Aden,Mombasa!
I am also a Scot, some of your answers seem to imply that I had some sort of choice in the matter? I was conscripted.
One final point, why are the troops still in Ireland??

You stupid moron - who the hell do you think you are?
Right - listen carefully to this, ****-for brains and I will try to use short words so as not to confuse your tiny intellect.
I am Welsh and part Irish descent and I do not have anything against the English, I know loads of lovely English people. My gorgeous other half is English, my son is half English and I am proud to have both in my lives.
You on the other hand are a nasty, sad ignorant, immature and obviously poorly educated example of a "Celt" and you make me sick and ashamed. Please remove the Welsh flag from your icon. I don't want it associated with the sort of bilge you are spewing.
You don't have a clue what you are talking about. Ancient History belongs in the past.
English people - please don't think this ignorant toenail is a typical example of a "Celt". He/she/it is NOT!

The English at they're quite often worst are simply arrogant attention seeking-Neo Norman scumbags, who believe what they want to believe - and change vast areas of historical fact to suit themselves.
At they're best - they are funny as hell, kind bright intelligent people.
It's difficult to generalise, there is a massive disparity of wealth and no common "English experience" - and so they don't have a consistent national identity to get behind - that doesn't raise itself above slagging off other nations - or being "English"..whatever that means.
