I am doing a debate for my speech class as to why we should not remove welfare in the United States. I have been searching but I am having trouble finding sources that back this statement. I know many people think welfare should be removed but for arguement's sake can anyone help me find why it shouldn't be removed?

There is a difference in removing it and repairing it.

The Welfare program is a very important program. It helps those who through some form of tragedy can not support themselves or their families. If a person losses his job because the company goes under, and the economy employment rate is at the point that the person can not find a job, and then what is he to do to support his family? The state of the economy is not his fault it is a government problem. This only starts a sloop downwards. Those employees who lost their jobs, now loose their homes, foreclosures and repossessions will only make the local economy worse. Home values will drop, crime will increase.

This is what people want to pull down. I disagree; to do this would only make the poor poorer. We need to be able to plug the financial hole that could cause a family to loose everything they have.

The change. Welfare need not be a permanent solution to a persons or communities problem. Welfare should only be available for a set amount of time such as 3 years instead of an open ended period. During this time frame, the family has to perform community service at a rate equivalent to the support they receive. In this period they should also receive job training to make them able to fill other employment opportunities with in the local area. This will help them get back on their feet and off of the welfare program.

And to think, I am a Republican wanting to give social aid. Most liberals though they had the corner on that market.

Well, I personally feel it should be very restrictive, but there are people who do actually need SOME help.

Thats the only reason I can think of. Otherwise I feel that welfare is an enabler to laziness and irresponsibility.

The working poor cannot survive on minimum wage alone, especially if they have children. Unless the government makes minimum wage a liveable wage, they should do what they can to help the poor cover living costs. Some people choose to go without rent or adequate clothing, just to cover rent. Something should be done about this.

There are people who fall on to hard times and need a hand up to help them get back on their feet. That however is not what we have today. We have generations of families on welfare than that needs to stop now.

Nobody thinks welfare should be removed. However, many think it should have accountability.
