I've been working at this office for 8 months. One of my co-workers has been working there for at least 19 months. Everytime she speaks to her department manager or HR regarding permanent employment she's given the "we'll see what we can do" or "I'll get back to you on that". Are they allowed to treat her this way? Is there anything she can do? Thanks.

I should've added that I was hired as full time and have been there for 8 months. I just don't understand why they would go out and hire outside when they have temps who've been there for so long.

No..beacause her "employer" is the temp agency, not the place where she is working if she got the job through an angency. However, if the company hired her as a temp themselves they may want to keep her on temp status prefer to keep her on temp status to avoid paying for medical insurance, vacations and sick time, etc. Always refer to your company's policy manual for definitive answers....but, they CAN keep you temp..forever, if they wish...unless you have it in writing that they would offer you permanent status after a certain period of time.

most places will hire a temp on permanently after 3 months. if you have been there for 8 months there probably not going to hire you. I'm not saying that your not good enough, as long as your a temp the company does not have to pay for insurance, unemployment and lots of other small little things. you'll have to decide if the benefits you have now are worth staying as a temp indefinitely, or start looking for a new job.

She can see through the ruse of management and seek other employment or contact the labor department and find out what her legal options are. She can also look back at the original agreement and see if there is a clause which states "temp to perm" position. If it does , she has the right to bring this to managements attention and find out why she hasn't been promoted to full time.

Yes. They can have her as a temp as long as they want to.

She might want to consider another job though because it seems they are taking advantage of her being a temp and not giving her the benefits of a permanent position.

Im a temp, and Im learning that we just sorta get thrown in somewhere and left to our bosses whims.

They dont have to make her permanent, cause then they dont have to give any benifits.

I figure she should start looking out for herslef. Find another agency, and other openings.

Yes they are. Unless she has a contract saying otherwise (with "temp to hire" terms) she can be a temp forever.

She can look for another job.
