Genetically, both the English and the Welsh share a great deal of commonality, meaning that both peoples are decsended from the original British hunter-gatherers of the last Ice Age.

The Welsh count themselves as a 'Celtic' people and to a certain extent this is true, though the English also have a great deal of Celtic (and earlier) ancestry.

The biggest difference is that the English come from northern Germany, southern Denmark and the Frisian Islands, and migrated to Britain in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. However, as stated above, the English share a common British ancestor as the English bred with the native inhabitants of Britain.

By far the biggest difference of all is language. Welsh is a Celtic language, whereas English is a Germanic language.

Legally no difference at all - you cant get a passport for either 'country'. England and wales are provinces of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Ethnically, people with a heritage of family members being born in England consider themselves English even when they were actually born somewhere else. Same for the Welsh.

I met someone in Texas who claimed to be Welsh. One of her great grandfathers was born in Wales.

Bit like saying your Texan or Floridian. Meaningless.

They are two of the different national groups in the United Kingdom.

The Welsh are a Celtic people with a Celtic language.

The English are Anglo-Saxons ( a mixture of English and Germans).
