there are alot of sites to do research (see the sources section i'll list a few) as for tanks due to the weight you would probably be best buying it locally, or getting one used but if you do buy used you should definitely sanitize it thoroughly, one way is to wash it out with a 50% bleach/water solution then rinsing VERY well and letting it air dry prior to use. then there are products that some reptile supply shops sell one is called ZooMed's "Wipeout 1" another thing to remember is that your choice of reptile is what determines what size cage to get, most retiles would be happy in a 10 or 20 gal tank as babies but once they start growing they will need larger enclosures, so my advice would be to figure out what type of reptile interests you the most then you can ask another question as to what husbandry is needed and supplies etc.
good luck and happy herping

I would look at Petco.com or Petsmart.com. They both have a good selection and offer care sheets for the animals they carry. You can view these online or in the store. I would recommend going to your local store because you can see the animals in person and also buy a tank while your there. A 10 gallon tank only cost about $10 but you will need a hood if you get a snake. That will put the price up to $20 or so. I really like snakes because I think they are easy to take care of.

i would suggest a leapord gecko if it is your first reptile. They are good to start out with. As for information, i respect you for doing the research instead of just going out and buying an animal you dont know how to care for. I would suggest google... just type in leapord gecko info or lizard/snake info and you should get some good info. Its pretty easy to care for some reptiles, just get a good aquarium (try hoobly.com or even ebay.com) and a heat lamp, make sure that about half the tank is under the heat lamp, and about half isnt. that way the reptile wont over heat and can stay comfortable. make sure a dish of clean water is available at ALL times, but make it shallow so the animal doesnt drown in it, also if you are going to feed your reptile live crickets, i would suggest putting a few twigs in the reptiles water bowl, crickets are quite dumb and will drown in the shalowest of water.. a twig or branch gives them a way to get out if they fall in. You should also provide some foliage (whether real or fake make sure it is safe and non-toxic) as well as a few hidey holes. And most important is a secure lid, nothing is worse than a fast lizard on the loose! i would also buy a small animal travel carrier. that way when you clean the cage out you can put the reptile in there. i hope this helps!

The first site is the BEST! You'll find more info on care, diet, lighting, and the reasons behind everything. Kingsnake (under caresheets) has a best 5 and worst 5 animals for beginers. There's also a classifieds section where you can research prices and a link to breeders and dealers where you can find more caresheets & husbandry info. You can also find used tanks at this site in the classifieds. Or, you can try the obvious Ebay, craigslist, etc. and the not-so-obvious Freecycle - organized by state and city - all listings are for FREE items: http://www.freecycle.org/

try kingsnake.com it has connections to many breeders and breeder pages on all kinds of reptiles. it may take a little research to find someone in your area though . it will depend on your final choice of a pet as to whether a tank is your best choice for housing. make sure to get one appropriate to the adult size of your pet so you don't have to get a bigger one later. THIS is definitely a cost saving move.
