Scorpions are far more common in new subdivisions than in older established neighborhoods. Friends of mine that live on the outskirts of Tucson find scorpions around (and in) their homes all the time. (More often they are outside or in garage and storage areas.) I live in a central neighborhood that has been here for fifty years...I have NEVER seen a scorpion around my house. Lots of black widows, though.
And contrary to the comment above, most scorpion stings are no more of a nuisance than a bee sting. Babies and toddlers are the most at risk and should certainly get emergency treatment. Most adults have no problems unless they are allergic to the venom...but you should still get treatment. The other factoid is that the smaller the sorpion, the more dangerous they are.
Black widow spiders are, in fact, quite a bit more dangerous than scorpions. Good thing about black widows is that they generally don't wander about much...preferring to stay hidden...and their webs make their hiding places pretty obvious. And while we're on the subject of critters, rattlesnakes are likewise more common on the outskirts of town than in established areas.
The good news with all these critters is that, in general, if you leave them alone, they leave you alone. This is especially true of snakes. 99% of the time, the person that gets bit by a snake was messing with the snake. Same thing with tarantulas, which have a reputation far worse than they deserve.

Really depends on the landscaping around your neighborhood. I lived near a mountain for a few years and it was not uncommon for scorpions to find their way into my apartment. I moved out to Surprise about 4 years ago and have never had an issue.

Yes, they are. In fact, you can find them in lots of "civilized" places. If you're going to be in an area where scorpions are common, try practicing some basic prevention methods to be sure you're not stung.
1) shake out your shoes before you put them on.
2) don't walk barefoot in the night, like to the toilet -- they seem to like cool areas like tiled floors.
Don't be too worried, though. Most scorpion stings are not life-threatening.

I've never seen one in AZ, but I would guess they are there. I lived in Tucson for 4 years, and Sierra Vista for another 4. Eight years in AZ and I never saw a scorpian. Now in Greece on an Island close to Scorpios, I saw lots of them.

Growing up in Glendale, AZ, we found about 3 small ones in our house, usually inside shoes or closets (ugh!). We deduced that they came from our big wood pile out in the back yard, for our fireplace. So, not having one of those might help.
