They should build them with concrete and tougher materials, like they do in other countries like Mexico, you've seen what happens to them when there's a tornado or hurricane or a fire, they don't stand a chance, what do you think?

It's called greed!

Contractors will spend $30,000 on materials and land, $20,000 on labor and fees, and then charge $100,000 for the $50,000 house = $50,000 profit. Any shortcuts they can get away with increases this profit.

For example: The house I grew up in had diagonal (actual 2"x 6")'s over all the outside walls that the siding was nailed to, now they put fiberboard only in the corners(if your lucky), leaving the structural integrity up to the siding and the insulation. Of course it depends on what part of the country you live in!

Disgusting isn't it!

Most houses in North America are built with bricks/mortar and/or wood. The 'less substantial' houses are purpose built... easily transported pre-fabricated homes are popular in some areas due to cost. Not everyone can afford to buy a "non-fragile" house as you describe. If YOU can, consider yourself lucky and donate some money to someone who lost theirs recently in an environmental catastrophe.
