It's sad but often true, ninety percent of casting is based on looks - not just, are you pretty or striking or drop-dead gorgeous with a killer bod and great hair, but also do you look like the part? It does sometimes happen that a casting director will see someone in a coffee shop or walking down the street and say "Wow, they look exactly like what I think this part I'm trying to cast should look". David Boreanez (Bones, Angel) was cast in Buffy the Vampire Slayer after the casting director saw him walking his dog.

But looks alone will not keep you afloat in Hollywood. You need some ability to act, which includes reading comprehension, the ability to take direction and criticism and the ability to go beyond yourself into a role physically and emotionally. You also need skin like rock, to defend against all the times you're going to be rejected, an iron will to not give up after what feels like the millionth time you've been told "Next", and a lot of luck. The actors who say they were discovered in a coffee shop were lucky.

The truth is there's no easy way to become a professional, Hollywood actor fast. You have to build your contacts, take crappy parts, wait tables and walk you dog past the casting agency, and hope that someone's watching and that that someone thinks you look like the next big thing.

First of all, you must speak clear, look good.
Then impress with your presence
Act as much as the character would act, but add something more, a sort of greatness, to make everyone cry for you
it's not a job like any other job, personally I think do it only if you're certain this is what you want to do

HARD WORK MAN....hours of pratice and study..lots of honest feedback....and back to back castings.....lots of failed casting....and PERSEVERANCE ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ....those coffe shop stories are not so likely....i bet you'll be 80 years old and still waiting for someone to 'discover you'....i think you also gotta get real and realize that you aren't gonna be a pro actor fast.....there are tens of thousands of people like you...so what are the odds?

exist. be breathing.

these are the basic requirements for acting.

the next: don't suck.

Don't forget, agents are there to get you auditions... they can't just put you on a set and say "act".
