i agree! i mean i'm a pretty devout christian but at least i can separate fact from fiction. did you hear about that georgia mom who keeps arguing that the books promote witchcraft?! it is about witchcraft, but it's not like they stand around chanting and sacrificing chickens or something! also, the main character is GOOD and wants to kill EVIL, who happened to murder his parents. i think the people who think HP is bad should actually read the book before they criticize it anymore.

The answer is quite simply, "no".
The reasoning behind this is as follows:
The majority of the people that I have seen condemning the Harry Potter series cite that the series is a veiled attempt to indoctrinate children in alternate religions such as Wicca. The truth of the matter is that there are little to no elements of Wicca within the Harry Potter series (the main common thread between the two is the liberal use of the word "witch" as well as the many stereotypes often associated with witchcraft, however the better portion of the series draws it's information from myths, legends, and religious stereotypes).
The important thing to see here, is that Harry Potter inspires the younger generations to not only read, but to enjoy reading. It also allows them to better utilize their imaginations, something that has been on the steady decline with the rise of television.
Remember: If you want to find out the truth on something, just research it. Included is some additional readings which further illustrate both sides of the story.

Stuff and nonsense. The Harry Potter series is just a good read for kids and adults, and I can't imagine that some twelve year old girl is going to start conducting black masses after reading any of the volumes. The series is just another in a long history of great fantasies, going back to the tales collected by the Brothers Grimm (and others), through Tolkein, CS Lewis, James Barrie, etc. If anything, religious folk concerned about any perceived satanic aspects of Harry Potter could use the books as a chance to open a dialogue with their kids about the nature of good and evil, how to be a good Christian, etc.
And yes, it's just fake--there's no magical train in London that will take me to Hogwarts, there are no ogres and giants (although, according to the Bible, giants did walk the earth at one time), and disembodied young ladies do not hang around public bathrooms.

Funny- My mom and step-dad are serious Christians. They have never read a Harry Potter book, or seen one of the movies. They however, will tell you everything that is wrong with Harry Potter(which is mostly stuff answered in other answers here.), and say that parents that allow their children to read it are uninvolved, and immoral. I've tried explaining the good vs. evil concept to them, but it doesn't matter, because they are all still "witches". HOWEVER!! They love Lord of the Rings, believe that is a great good vs. evil story, and that the magick in the movie is obviously made up just to make the story more interesting. Yes mom... Gandolf is make believe, but Harry Potter is based on??? One Bible-Thumper said Harry Potter is bad, and the rest just on the bandwagon. There is nothing wrong with Harry Potter, they are entertaining stories, teach good morals, and in case you haven't heard.... The stories have gotten a lot of kids (and adults) who have never read a book in their life, to enjoy reading.

Because there are some small minded fanatics who took a verse in the Bible just a little bit too literally. I.e. thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. Okay, maybe the practice of witchcraft in real life is a bad thing but this is a children's book. And children need fantasy. Besides, in the book you are born a wizard, you aren't dabbling in arcane spells making deals with the devil.

Harry Potter is of course not bad! It is only literary fiction and imaginative writing.
People are worried that watching "black magic" and "wizards" in the Harry Potter movies is evil. It is no different than a child watching "Spiderman" or "Star Wars."
An adult must explain to an impressionable child that such a thing is pure fantasy and not real.

They just don't want their kids to read, just play violent video games instead. Have you heard about the video game made by Christians that made you convert or kill now come on which is worse.
Hypocarcy is a good thing now isn't it.
I'm a christian and love reading the books and others dealing with witchcraft and so forth. It is fiction, and would not play that video game.

It's a book written by a person labeled as fiction. I am a Christian, read all the books to date, and seen all the movies. We have taken our kids to see them with us and they read them, too. A rational person can separate fact from fiction and the people who can't are the ones who give Christianity a bad rap.

mostly it's religious reasons. they think it's evil. i mean i'm christian and I don't think these books promote magic. some people don't care to look more closely into a book and see what it really means. just look up interviews from j.k and she even says that there is more behind the book than a boy with magical powers.

Mary S is correct. The Christian churches don't like it. Personally I think its okay as long as you don't enjoy or want to practice witchcraft, but only read for the story and entertainment. But I'm not sure. Hope I helped!
