I am originally from NYC, and moved down 5 years ago. I have to say that there are things here that drive me nuts, but there were things that drove me nuts in NY too.
First of all, you do not HAVE to know Spanish to live in Miami. Does it help...yes, but I don't speak a word of it and do just fine. I only get annoyed when I go to a store and can't find something, and the employees can't speak a word of English, so they don't know what I'm looking for.
The traffic is a nightmare. Too many drivers, not enough space for them to go. And half the people here don't know how to drive. They speed, are rude, uncourteous, and don't know the rules of the road.
Other than that, I love living here. There are plenty of things to do to keep busy. We have great shopping, food and activities. I get to laugh at the people wrapped up in layers, shoveling their driveways, while I hang out at the pool. I love seeing parrots fly overhead while I drink my morning coffee, and that my trees are green all year round. And the air smells good, not like smog. And in the summer, when it's so hot up north, in the 100's, it's only in the low 90's here.

Miami is ok. It's not the best place I've been and not the worst.
The beach is clean, but the water is not ( you probably won't see a lot of garbage floating in the water but it's a great place to get an ear infection if you want one). The beach is also VERY touristy (that's a given). If you want to see the 80 year old, glow in the dark, white guy running around in a speedo 3 sizes too small.. then South Beach is the place to be. (on the weekends or a holiday are the best times to see the most tourists)
The night life is basically trendy clubs, restaurants and so on. If you like that kind of lifestyle, you'll love it here. If you're not really into the club life, you probably won't love it, like it.. maybe, but not love it. Me.. not so much, so sometimes it's hard to find a good place to just hang out.
Traffic is a little scary at times and the people have an "I'm better and I have the right of way" attitude. Courteous drivers are rare.
The weather is beautiful, closest thing to a tropical climate without having to leave the country or live in Hawaii. It can get a little "chilly" in the winter time and really HOT in the summer. other than that It's pretty balanced.
It's one of those places you either love it, hate it, or you're torn between the two so you vacation here and leave when you get enough.

Well, I was born and raised in Miami... so of course I love Miami... It is my hometown. But I think a lot of outsiders probably wouldn't like it because of the high amount of immigrants who do not speak English. A lot of people complain about the overflow of Caribbean people, etc. But I think that the Caribbean culture there helps to make Miami what it is... a beautiful, bright city. Or maybe I am just saying that because I am Cuban and Jamaican.
And the beaches ARE NOT DIRTY. Obviously that poster has never seen a Californian beach. The beach has CLEAR blue-green water. The beaches are gorgeous! But just like I said before, a lot of parts in Miami is kind of like a third world country... Miami resymbols Cuba a lot, and the majority of the people there speak either Spanish, Creole, or French. And there is not a lot of White people there either... most of the White people in Miami are Jewish, and the other pack live in Broward away from the immigrants... Miami is kind of racist too and the people are a bit feisty.

I'm a college student here and love it! I like living in weather where it doesn't really get cold. Also, it's a great place to hit the beach after classes or to have a great night out, but it's a bit commercial and big on appearances. So your ego might take a hit. Not too sure about how it is if you're not in school, but I do get distracted from classwork sometimes. Probably similar for work.
